Frequent blackouts in Niterói bring losses to local residents and traders

Power cuts happen three times a week and can last up to 12 hours, resulting in considerable losses for the people of Niterói

Regular electricity blackouts are causing considerable distress for residents and businesses in certain neighbourhoods of Niterói. Areas like Barreto have been experiencing power cuts at least three times a week, particularly affecting streets like General Castrioto and Travessa Monte Alverne. People in these areas are reporting significant losses due to the power cuts which can last up to 12 hours.

Local resident, Rosângela Rodrigues revealed, 'We hardly know what's happening, but we practically have power cuts every day. We're forced to constantly rely on candles and have to deal with intense heat at night, not to mention the large number of mosquitoes.'

According to her, the service interruption usually starts around 5:30 in the evening and it can take until 5:30 or 6:00 in the morning for the power to be restored. She said, 'We try not to open the refrigerator when it's off to keep whatever is inside somewhat cold and avoid losing everything.'

On Wednesday last, a local bakery on Lobo Sarmet Street was also without power. The owner, Elisângela Oliveira voiced her frustration, 'This situation is constant here. We can't even bake bread because we can't run our electric ovens. I'm seriously considering giving up the business after all these years.'

Elisângela reported that there were three power cuts on her street just last week. 'We filed complaints, but no one seems to be able to help. This time they told us it was due to a transformer blowout, but we hardly ever get any answers or a time frame for when the issue will be resolved.'

85-year-old retiree Francisca Maria Paschoal, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, is another victim of these frequent power cuts. 'I can't sleep well because of the heat, and even eating becomes difficult because whatever food I had in the fridge has gone bad.'

The Leopoldina Júlio Diaz Gonzales health centre, just a short distance away, is also suffering from the same issue. An employee stated, 'We experience power interruptions almost every day, usually in the late afternoon after work hours, and it only comes back on the next day'

Besides Barreto, residents of other neighbourhoods in Niterói have been reporting the lack of electricity on social media. Last week, residents of Engenho do Mato's Rua Setenta e Oito complained about power cuts lasting more than 24 hours. The same issue was reported in properties near the corner of Lemos Cunha and Cinco de Julho in Icaraí, and on Rua José Clemente in the city centre.

The power company Enel confirmed that a disconnection affected the power supply on General Castioto, Lobo Sarmet Streets, and Travessa Monte Alverno, and that technical teams have been mobilised to fix the issue.
